Members shared diverse strategies for lowering A1C from 8, with the most common advice being daily exercise (especially walking 30-40 minutes), drinking plenty of water, eating smaller portions, avoiding soda, and limiting carbs to help maintain better blood sugar control. Several members credited technology like CGMs (Dexcom G6) and insulin pumps (Omnipod 5, Tandem X2 with Control IQ) for significant improvements, with some achieving A1Cs in the 5-6 range, while others mentioned GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and the importance of frequent blood sugar checks paired with appropriate insulin dosing. A recurring theme was personalization and persistence, including one member discovering through a Fructosamine test that their A1C readings were inaccurate, and another finding that avoiding pork at night helped reduce fat-related blood sugar spikes.

I use dexcom g6 and medtronics pump, brought down my a1c with low carb diet, not keto, I was following a diet from a Dr Bernstein. I modified it for myself but stick to 6-12-12 no more than 30 grams of carbs daily. I'm down to 5.9.

I use a Tandem X2 insulin pump with Control IQ automated insulin delivery system to keep my A1C in the 5 range. Latest endo visit was 5.4.

Is your A1C even accurate? Probably about 30 years ago, my Endo suspected that my A1C was not an accurate indicator of my blood sugar levels. He ordered a Fructosamine lab test. My last 2 Endos have routinely ordered it as well. But now with all the data and reports we have access to, I now know for a fact that my A1C is incorrect. The Fructosamine level corresponds to my TIR data. You may want to talk to your Endo about ordering both tests at least once to see if they’re comparable. If they are, then you know you need to make changes in your Diabetes protocol.
