A person doesn't have to disclose any medical information about one self on an application, but it makes sense to let somebody know that you're a T1D and where you keep your hypoglycemia stash. MOST employers are good about helping out or excusing a person to tend to one self. I'm a nurse, and told my co-worker at a previous job where my Glucagon pen, glucose gel and liquid shots were in my desk drawer. I was good about eating a snack mid-morning to prevent a low. Since it was just the two of us, (we were triage nurses) we ate our desks because we had a great office. One day, I was opening my lunch to eat, and the next thing I remember, there's 20 people, including the fire fighters from across the street who were the local EMS responders who had already started a saline lock and given me a Dextrose.
I asked my co-worker several day later, after hearing about how petrified she was,(nurses are sometimes the worst about diabetes!) why she didn't give me the Glucagon injection. Her first response was a shocked, "I didn't even know it was in there!" (I had a piece of red tape on my second drawer and told her and our DON about my stash). I later learned that....and this was at a clinic FULL of medical professionals-they were instructed to call 911 and never treat a fellow employee. I no longer work there.(sorry for the dissertation)
I worked as a medical assistant for many years, and no one knew I was a type 1 diabetic, till one time I had a low sugar and they tested me because I was very low, like 45.
They fed me juice and crackers. And asked me if I was Diabetic. I lied and said no. But they questioned me about getting tested lol, needless to say I quit the next week, they called me numerous times. lol
