Members discussed whether people with Type 1 diabetes can donate blood, with many sharing they had been told not to donate due to their diagnosis or medications, though some noted confusion around whether these restrictions still apply. Several members expressed relief at learning they weren't alone in feeling pressured or guilty about not donating, while one member shared updated guidance from Diabetes Canada indicating that as of 2021, people with Type 1 can now donate blood with certain limitations. A recurring theme was the confusion caused by differing policies for Type 1 versus Type 2 diabetes and the importance of checking with medical teams about current eligibility.

The Red Cross encouraged Type 2 diabetics to give so those that didn’t understand the difference caused an issue.

Liz~ I'm curious about your situation. Do you know if whoever was medically in charge of the blood donation program where you worked would have accepted a blood donation from a T1D?

I was always told don't, both from diagnosis itself as well as medications

Before I was diagnosed with Type 1 I donated blood fairly regularly. I hadn't given it any thought until I read the question so I googled it for my area. As per Diabetes Canada people with Type 1 are now (effective 2021) permitted to donate blood (with certain understandable limitations (see article)). It's too soon for me to even think about it as I'm new to the Type 1 club and am just trying to figure things out but it's something I will talk to my endocrinologist about for sure.
