What is considered a "low" magnesium level? It is not a measurement in my quarterly blood panels. It seems magnesium supplements could easily cause negative side effects of diarrhea. Regularly using fresh lettuce, or spinach leaves, with my noon-time sandwich, or an evening salad, is a sufficient and safer way to maintain magnesium for me.

Magnesium plays a vital role in blood sugar control and insulin action for people with type 1 diabetes. Since people with diabetes often have lower magnesium levels due to increased urinary losses, maintaining adequate magnesium can be especially important. Research shows that magnesium supplementation may help improve glycemic control and insulin sensitivity in type 1 diabetes. While magnesium supplementation can be beneficial, it's important to approach it carefully. High doses can cause side effects like diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal cramping. In severe cases, excessive intake could lead to magnesium toxicity with symptoms including muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting supplements to determine the right dosage based on your individual needs and to check your current magnesium levels. A practical approach is to first focus on incorporating magnesium-rich foods into your diet, such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and legumes. This can help maintain healthy magnesium levels naturally while supporting overall health. For those who may need additional supplementation, working with your healthcare team will ensure you get the benefits while minimizing any potential risks.
