Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, but adults are often misdiagnosed initially because many healthcare providers don't realize it can occur after childhood. In fact, adult-onset type 1 diabetes is more common than childhood-onset.

The key difference is that adults tend to produce more insulin than children when type 1 develops, which can lead to more reasonable blood sugar levels at first. This can cause confusion in diagnosis. Studies show that about 38% of people over 30 with diabetes symptoms were incorrectly treated for type 2 diabetes when they actually had type 1. Getting the right diagnosis often requires specific testing, like C-peptide tests and antibody testing, which can definitively show whether someone has type 1 diabetes.

Many myT1Dteam members have shared stories of being misdiagnosed for years before getting the correct type 1 diagnosis and proper treatment, which made a significant difference in their blood sugar control.
